Examples of this well known patchwork pattern, Triple Irish Chain quilt block, can be found dating from the 1800’s. It is only intricate in appearance for it is simply pieced in checkerboard fashion using the pieced blocks numbers 1 and 2. Each block is 10” square.
When all fifty blocks number 1 and forty-nine number 2 blocks are complete set them together as follows: row 1, horizontally, place five number 1 blocks alternately with four number 2 blocks. Row 2, set four number 1 blocks alternately with five number 2 blocks. Continue in this pattern until eleven horizontal rows of nine blocks in each row have been set together. The quilt top will measure 90” x 110”.
This pattern is so energy filled that a border is strongly suggested to contain and frame the composition. The choice of fabric should be one or more of the three used in the quilt.
A large, open shape, such as the B piece, lends itself to a variety of quilting choices which could range from simple cross quilting to more complex feathers and other intricate designs.
