To make the Rob Peter to Pay Paul quilt block:

Fill-in Blocks:

Cut 8 from green fabric, each 12 3/4 inches square; cut in half diagonally to fill in along ends and sides of quilt. Cut 2 blocks, each 9 3/4 inches square; cut in half diagonally to fit on each corner of the quilt.

Number of Pieces: Block Quilt
Unit #1 – Green 2 78
White 2 78
Unit #2 – Green 2 78
White 2 78

Materials:

(All yardages are approximate and of 36” wide fabrics unless otherwise stated.) 3 1/4 yards each of Green and White for Units #1 and #2; 1 1/2 yards of Green for Fill-in Blocks; 1 1/2 yards of Green for Border.

Lining – 3 1/8 yards of 81” wide white bleached muslin sheeting; launder and cut to size.

Pieced Block:

Stitch two Green and two White Units #2 together, alternating colors, to form a circle; stitch a White Unit #1 to each Green Unit #2, and a Green Unit #1 to White Unit #2 to form block. Make 39 blocks in this manner.

Setting Quilt:

Sew blocks together as shown in the sketch (1/4 of the quilt). Fill-in around edge with green half blocks, and one each of the smaller half blocks at each corner as shown.

Border:

Cut material into 5-inch wide strips and stitch together to form one long strip. Stitch strip around outside edge of quilt, mitering the corners.

Lining and Interlining:

Cut 1” smaller around than quilt-top with border. Place quilt-top on smooth, flat surface (such as the floor), wrong side up; interlining on top of it; lining (right side up, smoothing out all wrinkles) on top of interlining. Baste from center out through all three layers. Turn in border seam allowance, whip-stitch in place.

Quilting:

Use matching thread and fine running stitch to quilt around each unit and the inside edge of border.
