Joseph’s Coat Quilt Block is an intricate design – a single block, measuring 7 1/2 inches square and is composed of 61 pieces. However you will find this very old and cherished Joseph’s Coat quilt pattern makes up into a very colorful and attractive quilt when two colors plus white are used as shown here. It can also be made from work-basket scraps which makes it a money-saver.

A simple method of assembling a square is to make the corner squares (indicated by dark outline), then the center cross; completing the block by setting in the corner squares.

Materials:

(All yardages are approximate and of 36” wide fabrics unless otherwise stated.)

Single Size:

5/8 yards of Orange for Unit A; 1 5/8 yards each of Orange and Green for Unit B; 1/2 yards of Green for Unit C; 1 yard of Green for Unit D; 5/8 yards of Green for Unit E, and 4 2/3 yards of White for unit E. 1 1/4 yards of Green or color desired for Border.

Lining – Percale sheet; launder and cut to size.

Number of Units per Block:

A – 1, B – 16, C – 4, D – 4, E – 36.

Double Size:

1 1/4 yards of Orange for Unit A; 3 1/4 yards each of Green and Orange for Unit B; 1 yard of Green for Unit C; 2 yards of Green for Unit D; 1 1/4 yards of Green for Unit E, and 9 1/3 yards of White for Unit E. 1 3/4 yards of Green or color desired for Border.

Lining – 9 3/4 yards of percale. Cut into 3 equal lengths – each 3 1/4 yards long. Seam together and launder before cutting to size.

Pieced Block:

To form, join units as shown in Diagram on this page, starting at center and working out.

Setting Quilt:

Single Size – Make twelve strips – each 7 blocks across. Set these strips together to form coverlet. Double Size: - Make 14 strips each 12 blocks across; set strips together to form coverlet.

Border:

Cut material into 5 inch wide strips and stitch together to form one long strip. Stitch around coverlet, mitering the corners.

Lining and Interlining:

Cut 1” smaller around than quilt-top with border. Place quilt-top, wrong side up, on a flat smooth surface (such as the floor); interlining on top of it; lining (right side up, smooth out wrinkles) on top of interlining. Baste all 3 layers together, working from the center out. Turn in border seam allowance and whip-stitch in place.

Quilting:

Use a fine running stitch and matching thread to quilt around each unit and the inside edge of the border.
