The Job’s Troubles Quilt Block is a very attractive design when the star pattern is made in two shades of a color against a white background, or a solid-color star against a background of a lighter contrasting color. Either way, it’s sure to win many compliments.

Size and Number of Blocks:

Each block measures 6 inches square, and there are 140 pieced blocks.

Without Border – 60” x 84”, With Border – 68” x 92”

Materials:

(All yardages specified are approximate and of 36” wide fabrics unless otherwise stated.) 1 3/4 yards of Green and 1 3/4 yards of Chartreuse for A units; 5 yards of White for B units; 1 1/4 yards of Green or desired color for border.

Lining:

Percale sheet; launder and cut to size.
Or – 2 5/8 yards of 72” wide bleached white sheeting (muslin), laundered and cut to size.

Directions:

Cut on dotted lines; press back along solid lines as a guide for seam allowance.

Piecing Block:

Combine A units, alternating colors when two shades are used; then add B units as shown in block diagram below. Make 140 of these blocks.

Forming Strips – Setting Quilt:

Make 14 strips, each 10 blocks across; stitch strips together for quilt-top.

Border:

Cut border material into 5” wide strips; seam together to form one long strip. Stitch around quilt-top, mitering corners.

Lining and Interlining:

Cut 1” smaller around than quilt-top. Place quilt-top, wrong side up, on smooth flat surface; Interlining on top of it; lining (right side up, smooth out wrinkles) on top of interlining. Baste through all 3 layers. Turn border seam allowance in, whip-stitch in place.

Quilting:

Quilt around each unit of star, each block and inside edge of border, using a fine running stitch and quilting through all 3 layers of material
