Block of the Month Pattern

Block of the Month Quilt Patterns — Stitch Your Quilt One Block at a Time

Welcome to FreeQuilt’s Block of the Month (BOM) collection — where quilting becomes a relaxed, ongoing project rather than a race to finish. With free monthly blocks, you can build a beautiful quilt at your own pace, without pressure or deadlines.

From classic star and log cabin motifs to appliqué designs featuring state flowers, birds, or calendars, many themes and styles await your creativity. Whether your heart is in traditional piecing or whimsical applique, there’s a BOM pattern here that can grow into a gorgeous quilt.

Why a Block of the Month Project Is So Enjoyable

  • Stress-free progress. Working block by block keeps your project manageable — you don’t have to complete the entire quilt in one go.
  • Inspiration from tradition. Themes like flying geese, log cabins, and star blocks are timeless quilt motifs that appeal to many makers.
  • Theme flexibility. Use themes like seasons, calendars, flora and fauna, or state symbols to give personality and meaning to your quilt.
  • Stash-busting elegance. BOMs are a perfect way to use leftover scraps, fat quarters, or fabrics you love but haven’t yet used.
  • Fun with groups. Share your progress, swap blocks or fabrics, and enjoy the quilting journey together — in guilds or online sewing circles.

Getting Started: How to Follow a BOM

  1. Pick a monthly block pattern. Browse the gallery listings, choose a design or theme you adore, and click to download.
  2. Print and collect your block. Many blocks are offered in a 6" size — ideal for quilts, patchwork, or sampler layouts.
  3. Gather fabrics and color scheme. Decide on a palette or theme that unifies your blocks.
  4. Sew the block. Follow piecing or appliqué instructions, press carefully, and square up your block.
  5. Continue month to month. As new blocks are added, you’ll grow your quilt, piece by piece.
  6. Assemble and finish. When you have enough blocks, arrange your layout, add borders or sashing, quilt, and bind.

Tips to Make Your BOM Experience Even Better

  • Consistent fabric story. Choose a cohesive palette to help all your blocks feel like they belong together.
  • Document your journey. Keep notes on fabric choices, sources, and any changes you make — it becomes part of your quilt’s story.
  • Collaborate with others. Swap ideas, fabric chunks, or even whole blocks with friends or guilds.
  • Be kind to yourself. Imperfections are part of handmade quilts. Each block tells your quilting story.
