Whirlwind Quilt Block Pattern
This whirlwind pattern is also called Pinwheel or Whirligig, and the variations for this block are almost limitless. Smaller triangles are joined together to form a larger triangle, which is then stitched to a larger triangle. This forms one-quarter of the completed block. By alternating colors and rotating the sub-squares, there are scores of design possibilities.
This pattern is perfect for using up colorful scraps, along with a basic background solid or combining a coordinated series of prints and solids to make a unified pattern. This block pattern looks good set straight up and down. However, it has a lot of appeal when set on the diagonal, separated by plain colored squares.
