Cut 20 seven inch squares from various background fabrics. For a larger quilt, use more squares.
Choose from the applique patterns on the FreeApplique.com website. This boy's quilt uses basically insects and animals. Choose fabric for each of the appliques and apply Wonder Under to the back of the fabric. Trace the applique patterns on the Wonder Under, then cut them out. Iron the appliques on your 7" squares and sew them with a medium zigzag stitch.
Cut forty strips from an additional fabric for the edge of the 7' squares. These strips are for the sides of the blocks and need to be 7" x 1 1/2".
Also cut an additional forty strips of the same color for the top and bottom of the blocks. The dimension of these strips will be 9 1/2" x 1 1/2".
Sew the strips to each block, first on all sides and then the top and bottom. Now put the squares in an order of your choosing, five down and four across and sew the rows together. You can either put another strip around all the edges after you have sewn the rows together or start putting the batting and backing on.
